Glossary – Common abbreviations or phrases and their meaning

DLA Disability Living Allowance – the main benefit awarded to the child, recognising their physical and other difficulties. Award is irrespective of parents’ income.
DMARD Disease Modifying and Regulating Drugs
JIA Juvenile idiopathic arthritis – this is the new name for the group of arthritis conditions that affect children for more than six months.
JCA Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis – this is the medical term used before 1999. It is now replaced with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
JRA Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis – this is the American term used in most instances for children with JIA, although increasingly JIA is now used.
NSAIDs Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
SEN Special educational needs – often categories of need still used include medical, physical, emotional or learning difficulty.
SENCo Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator – this is qualified teacher who is employed to co-ordinate the assessment and delivery of supported learning for all pupils in a school with any form of special need.
